The Buffalo News is the primary newspaper of the Buffalo-Niagara region.  The mission of The Buffalo News is to provide news and information to the community we serve, and to report it honestly, accurately and fairly.

The News has the largest news-gathering organization of any media in upstate New York, helping to produce the largest newspaper in the state outside the New York City area.  The Buffalo News publishes three editions every morning (Western New York, Final and Niagara) and appears online at BuffaloNews.com.

The Buffalo Evening News first published on October 11, 1880 as a Sunday-only newspaper and sold for one cent.  Founded by Edward H. Butler, it quickly became one of a handful of daily newspapers serving what we now call Western New York.

In 1914 as a result of a gentleman's agreement with the Courier-Express, The Buffalo Evening News stopped printing Sundays, printing its weekend edition Saturday night.

In 1945, The News applied for FCC permission to build a television station.  News' Editor-in-Chief and President Alfred Kirchhofer and Butler received approval in 1946 and the call letters WBEN-TV were assigned.  The News also owned radio stations WBEN (930), WYRK (106.5) and WTSS (102.5).  After the death of owner Katherine Butler in 1977, the paper divested its broadcast holdings.

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway company purchased the newspaper in 1977 and immediately began publishing seven days - with the weekend editions printing Saturday and Sunday morning.  After the Courier-Express closed in 1982, The Buffalo Evening News shortened its name to The Buffalo News, printing both morning and evening editions until October 1, 2006 when it became a morning only newspaper.

Today, The Buffalo News publishes three editions every morning (Western New York, Final and Niagara) and appears online at BuffaloNews.com reaching over 400,000 readers across 8 counties each day.
