Below are some of the projects The News was involved in during 2010 and will continue in 2011. In some cases, we recognized a need in Western New York and helped formulate a plan to address it. In other instances, organizations or individuals came to us with problems or needs, and we helped them with a new approach. This is above and beyond the many institutions to which The News makes direct cash contributions. We support programs that provide the greatest amount of good for the greatest number of people, especially for families and people with special needs.

News Neediest Fund
More than 12,000 Western New York families received food, clothing and toys through this annual show of good will. Because The News pays for all expenses, every dollar donated went directly to caring for the needy. The success of this enormous effort is also made possible through the assistance of The United Way of Buffalo and Erie County and the Holiday Partnership. In order to insure that your gift reaches a needy child this year, please make your dontaion by December 15th. To make a donation or learn more about News Neediest, click here. ^top

Buffalo News Free Summer Jazz Series

Kids Day

Cradle Beach
Through the annual fund drive for Cradle Beach, The News raised funds to support Cradle Beach, a residential camp program that serves 900 children with disabilities and children from economically disadvantaged families. The 63-acre campus on Lake Erie in Angola offers state-of-the-art, completely accessible facilities including a swimming pool, paved nature trails, and a low ropes challenge course. Camp activities are designed to promote the 40 Developmental Assets essential for healthy development and the New York State learning standards. ^top

The News adoped Houghton Academy Buffalo Public School 69 as part of an initiative to improve education through business, a program organized through the Buffalo Alliance for Education.  Working closely with the faculty and in an effort to strengthen the curriculum, we bring resources that are not available through the district.  These include helping with the school newspaper - a tool for encouraging good writing; scholarships at each marking period to reward improving students; clothing drives, monetary donations, staff development, subscriptions to NIE and more.

Gus Macker Basketball

For the 20th year, The News helped sponsor this two-day, 3-on-3 tournament
that raised Buffalo PAL and Kids Escaping Drugs. Gus Macker is the second
largest annual outdoor event held downtown, with 3,000 players participating
and drawing nearly 50,000 spectators. ^top
