NYS Learning Standards: V.A. 1; V.B. 2; V.C. 1-5; V.D. 1-5; V.E. 1-5; V.F. 1-3, 5. Meets the New York State requirement for 1/3 semester of personal financial management.
Cost: Free! Teacher training and promotional support in Western New York proudly provided by the University of Buffalo School of Management and M&T Bank. The program was developed by the American Financial Services Association Education Foundation.
Receive: One newspaper per student, every Monday for ten weeks.

Stand Up to Bullying created by the National School Climate Center.
NYS Learning Standards: ELA 5-10, SS 5-10. Educators can register at http://www.schoolclimate.org/bullybust/educators/partner_schools/ to download the student supplement and teaching guide.
Cost: FREE! Sponsored by Parade Magazine for the first 200 teachers.
Receive: One newspaper per student, one day per week for ten weeks (select any weekday). Using the inspiring story of the Broadway Musical WICKED and real-world examples from current events, Stand Up to Bullying gives students concrete strategies for avoiding bullying as well as ideas to help create positive, safe and caring school communities. Students may also enter the "Defying Gravity" contest.

Bisons Baseball - Building Character with Baseball
Grades 5-12
NYS Learning Standards: ELA #5-12 (some connections to Math, Science and History) Dates -- Starts March 21, 2011. Newspapers delivered every Monday (no delivery April 18 or or May 30) through June 6, 2011.
Cost: Free, sponsored by the Buffalo Bisons.
Receive: One newspaper per student, Mondays, with student supplement. This supplement will prompt students to explore ethics and integrity and why they are important in everyday decision making. Activity ads will be published each Monday. Participating teachers may select one student to attend the sportswriter camp taking place at Coca Cola Field on April 22.

Global Warming
Grades 6-12
NYS Learning Standards: ELA, Math, Science, Technology and Social Studies
Dates -- five consecutive days (Monday-Friday) or once a week for five weeks (select day).
Cost: $.95 per student.
Receive: one newspaper for five consecutive days or select delivery on one day for five consecutive weeks. With this program, students will be challenged to use published facts, projections and predictions to comprehend the warming trend. They will learn about innovative "green" technologies; new advancements in engines and transmissions that have resulted in clean-running and more efficient vehicles being used around the world.

Black History
Grades 4-12
NYS Learning Standards: LOTE 2, ELA 1-4, SS 1, 5
Dates – Five consecutive days in February (teacher selects)
Cost: $.95 per student
Receive: One newspaper per student, with teacher guide. History is a living thing rewritten every day. This is especially true in the African American community whose members are breaking new ground in every field. Activities focus on current newsmakers, issues and events to show students how things happening right now connect with the Black History struggles of the past.

The Stock Market Game
Grades 4-12
NYS Learning Standards: MST 2, 3, ELA 3
Dates: Three sessions remaining: September 8-April 30; October 12-December 18; February 22-April 30; Enrichment Session March 22-May 28.
Cost: Free! Newspaper subscriptions sponsored by First Niagara Bank. Team registration fees sponsored by the Foundation for Investor Education.
Registration: Teams must register directly at www.stockmarketgame.org. The Buffalo news will contact registered teams to confirm newspaper subscription information. One Monday-Friday newspaper per team, per session. A virtual $100,000 cash account is used to teach investing and long-term savings. Students gain skills in core competencies, critical thinking and teamwork in an engaging and competitive program that meets NYS Learning Standards. Awards reception in May for game winners.

The Holocaust - Remembering the Past, Safeguarding the Future
Grade 6-12

Dates: Five consecutive days (teacher selects)

Receive: One newspaper per student Monday-Friday with student supplement. This 16-page supplement and accompanying subscription provides the ideal foundation upon which to teach about one of the world’s darkest hours. The Holocaust provides a synopsis of events and helps students understand the implications, giving a real world view of history and how it relates to current events.

Receive: One newspaper per student, Monday-Friday with student supplement. Raise your students’ energy IQ. NYSERDA’s Energy Smart Students’ program joins with NiE to provide opportunities for learning about energy use and its impact on the environment and economy. Students will use the newspaper to complete activities involving energy, efficiency and policy and will be able to carry the message of energy efficiency back home.

In response to the NYS Legislature’s resolution designating NYS Disability History Week, the Museum has developed a curriculum dedicated to educating students and adults on the advancements and struggles of those with disabling conditions. Students use newspaper articles, advertisements and published pieces to enhance the activities based around The Museum of disAbility History’s website (www.museumofdisability.org).
