Black History

Cost: $.95 per student
Receive: One newspaper per student, with teacher guide. History is a living thing rewritten every day. This is especially true in the African American community whose members are breaking new ground in every field. Activities focus on current newsmakers, issues and events to show students how things happening right now connect with the Black History struggles of the past.

The Stock Market Game
Grades 4-12
NYS Learning Standards: MST 2, 3, ELA 3
Dates: Three sessions remaining: January 12-April 24; February 23-May 1; March 16-May 22.
Cost: Free! Newspaper subscriptions sponsored by First Niagara Bank. Team registration fees sponsored by the Foundation for Investor Education.
Registration: Teams must register directly at www.stockmarketgame.org. The Buffalo news will contact registered teams to confirm newspaper subscription information. One Monday-Friday newspaper per team, per session. A virtual $100,000 cash account is used to teach investing and long-term savings. Students gain skills in core competencies, critical thinking and teamwork in an engaging and competitive program that meets NYS Learning Standards. Awards reception in May for game winners.

The Holocaust - Remembering the Past, Safeguarding the Future
Grade 6-12
NYS Learning Standards: SS #2, 3, ELA #1-4
Dates: Five consecutive days (teacher selects)
Cost: $.95 per student
Receive: One newspaper per student Monday-Friday with student supplement. This 16-page supplement and accompanying subscription provides the ideal foundation upon which to teach about one of the world’s darkest hours. The Holocaust provides a synopsis of events and helps students understand the implications, giving a real world view of history and how it relates to current events.

Receive: One newspaper per student, Monday – Friday with student supplement. The internet is an extraordinary resource but students need to learn how to use caution when going online. The program is designed as a classroom tool while also including information and activities for parents to use with their children at home.

Cost: Free! Sponsored by the New York State Energy and Research Development Authority
Receive: One newspaper per student, Monday-Friday with student supplement. Raise your students’ energy IQ. NYSERDA’s Energy Smart Students’ program joins with NiE to provide opportunities for learning about energy use and its impact on the environment and economy. Students will use the newspaper to complete activities involving energy, efficiency and policy and will be able to carry the message of energy efficiency back home.

Receive: One newspaper per student, Monday-Friday, with student supplement. In response to the NYS Legislature’s resolution designating NYS Disability History Week, the Museum has developed a curriculum dedicated to educating students and adults on the advancements and struggles of those with disabling conditions. Students use newspaper articles, advertisements and published pieces to enhance the activities based around The Museum of disAbility History’s website (www.museumofdisability.org).

NEW FOR 2008-2009 Junior Achievement – Financial Literacy, Entrepreneurship and Work Readiness
Grade k-12
NYS Learning Standards: All JA programs align with SS, CDOS, ELA and certain JA programs align with MST.
Dates: Sessions run once per week for five to eight weeks during the school year. Newspapers will be delivered on the same days that the program is in session.
Cost: Free, sponsored by Five Star Bank.
Receive: A supplemental teacher/volunteer guide of program specific activities along with newspaper subscription.
