GENERAL

Now I Get It! Reinforces a positive and relevant lifetime reading habit in students by engaging them with an authentic text - the newspaper. Activities in the teacher's guide are designed to help students improve their reading comprehension. The teacher controls the difficulty of each activity through individual selection of newspaper texts for each activity. Each newspaper section contains its own text structures, which are predictable. When students become familiar with text structures, they will have better control over them and will find it easier to read the newspaper.

100 Ways to Use the News (P,I, M, H) The newspaper is divided into a variety of different sections. The NiE staff, together with local educators has put together this comprehensive teaching guide to demonstrate ways to make learning more interesting, fun and relevant.

NiE for K-3 (P) A favorite, activities and worksheets introduce newspapers to children in primary grades. The focus is on newspaper knowledge, language arts, writing, social studies, science, health and math. Mini Pages (M, H) Mini Pages are part of Wednesday's special section, NeXt, and teachers who sign up for these lessons will receive them via email two weeks in advance of publication date. 

Maintain the Brain (I, M)  The newspaper has been referred to as a "living textbook" and can be used to enhance skills across all content areas.  Unlike textbooks, which are outdated by the time they get into students' hands, the newspaper is alive with current events as they are happening.

Weekly Parade in the Classroom (M, H) These downloadable weekly lessons blend current events with critical thinking activities. Be sure to request these if you order a Sunday subscription for delivery on Monday.

These conversation starters and newspaper activities provide the practice for students to “get what they need to succeed.”

Special Education Series (M, H)This guide introduces the newspaper as an important and valuable community resource, explaining the format and content that can be found in any newspaper.

Literacy Adult Basic Education.Instructors who teach basic reading, writing and life skills to adults will enjoy this 68-page curriculum guide. Three sections of the guide deal with knowledge of the alphabet, word recognition, decoding skills and reading. The fourth section of the book addresses numerical literacy, including number sense, counting and simple addition/subtraction. Activities incorporate the daily newspaper.

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

Newspapers: The Core of Language Arts (M, H) Knowing what news is and where to find it is a necessity of life.  This guide can be used for portfolio pieces, prompts for writing journals and has many ideas for putting reflective thinking and metacognition into practice.

Newspapers Make the Write Connection (I, M) The newspaper provides models of different writing styles, topics and material for content writing activities.  Focusing on creative, narrative, informational and persuasive writing, there are 46 activity sheets along with rubrics for grading.

Connect to the World. Helps students comprehend what they read by acquiring, confirming, and creating meaning. Activities focus on predicting, questioning and using imagery.

 

SOCIAL STUDIES

Famous New Yorkers 1-6 series(I,M) Offered through the NYS Publishers Foundation, these teachers’ guides feature prominent New Yorkers each with a 500 word profile, a NYS locators map and newspaper activities.

Rediscover New York (I) It was in New York that John Peter Zenger fought for and won the principles of Freedom of the Press. Today it is more important than ever for citizens to be aware of the role of the newspaper in helping keep pace in the changing world. This guide acquaints students with NY and reaffirms the versatility and scope of a daily newspaper.

Read All About It(I) Five days of instruction helps students explore relationships with their communities, countries and other nations.

Making the Buffalo News.This comprehensive teaching guide includes lessons that explore the history of The Buffalo News, from an evening edition in the 1880s to today. First Amendment, career opportunities and the function of a newspaper are included.

 

MATH, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

The newspaper provides excellent opportunities for students to learn about money and economics and how they affect our lives. This teacher’s guide is designed to help you use the newspaper to help students process various issues of money and the economy. It contains suggested activities as well as several activity sheets that you may photocopy and distribute for students to complete.                                                                                                                                                                      

Math + Newspapers = Fun (I, M) Developed by the Council of Teachers of Mathematics, it includes activities for the eight math standards, with 33 reproducible activity sheets.
